Scotland’s incomparable landscapes, dramatic history, and charismatic people make it a joy for travellers. It was one of the first countries I visited and it helped to infect me with the travel bug. A week in Scotland and I was hooked. I wanted to see as much of the world as I could.

It’s a place where every bend reveals a new vista and it seems that every rock or stone has a story that the locals are happy to impart. How could you not get hooked?

And if you want to see even more, check out my second gallery of Scotland photos.

Breathtaking photos! You had me admiring them for long minutes!
Scotland has such remote places, despite Britain being so densely populated. Seems like that northern part still remained “fresh” and rather untouched.

hello from Canada… I am another photographer and am a friend of Ruperts… I will be staying at the cottage in October and cant wait to take many many photos… your work is so beautiful….

  3. Darby, Your work is inspiring. I got turned on to your wonderful work by Kenn Ginn at GPC Labworks. The isle of Skye is my next trip. What would be the best time of year to get the most dramatic shots? I was thinking Sept.or Oct.

I imagine that the wind blows continuously. did you have any issues with vibrations. I saw an Albert Watson/BBC doc. where he had 4 or 5 assistants, where one of them held a solid umbrella to shield him from the wind. Yours comments would be appreciated.

    Warm regards,

    Richard

      Hi Richard,

Glad you like my work. The last time I was in Skye was in September and the weather could have been more cooperative. A hurricane from the US was blowing back into the region and it meant a lot of rain. The key is to be persistent and get yourself to the right spots even if the weather doesn’t look like it will work. Sometimes you’ll get nice surprises and sometimes you’ll get wet, but that’s just how it goes. September and October will be a mixed bag of weather and that should get you some drama.

If you’re looking to stay dry, I think April and May are supposed to be good times and you mostly get to avoid the midges. Skye is beautiful enough that it’s probably hard to go too wrong any time of the year (though there are some roads I wouldn’t want to drive in the winter).

I didn’t have too many troubles with the wind. As sturdy a tripod as you will realistically carry is the starting point. After that, some people have success hanging their camera bag from the tripod or you could also carry along a nylon bag with you. Load it up with nearby rocks and hang that from the tripod and you should get a bit more stability. Having five assistants would be a nice luxury, but I don’t think they’d all fit in my car!

On my most recent trip to Scotland, I forgot my own advice and probably lost a shot because of it. I had myself nestled up against a wall, but the wind was powerful enough that it continued shaking things a bit. If you can get away with it, another thing that can help is to take off the lens hood from the camera. Breezes can get caught in there depending on which way the wind is blowing.

  4. Thanks for the advice, Darby…….very helpful.

Darby, right after I found your site, I bookmarked it, and I don’t bookmark many sites these days. I am preparing for an upcoming UK trip with my family, and that is how I ran into your photos. I too love travel photography, but this is not a photography-focused trip. I greatly admire your use of light and water effects. Most of the photos on your site are truly breathtaking, and I am sure I will be coming back often to look at more of your galleries. Keep up the inspiring work!
